Optional excursions Supplements apply
Capri
& Anacapri
Monday
Pre–book for £69 or in resort for €80
A full–day excursion by boat to the lovely island of Capri. For centuries Capri has lured generations of artists, writers and celebrities with its outstanding natural beauty and, more recently, its top–end designer boutiques and bustling café culture. A short funicular railway takes you from the harbour of Marina Grande to Capri town, and your visit includes a walking tour around its little streets and alleyways. You may wish to take a stroll among the balmy green Gardens of Augustus (admission €1pp), which offer good sea views, or perhaps take a boat trip around the island to see the Blue Grotto (€17pp). Later on we carry on to Anacapri, a little higher up in the mountains, where there is an optional visit to Villa San Michele, a house–museum offering the best views on the island (admission €7), or alternatively you could take the chairlift from Anacapri to the summit of Monte Solaro (€11 return).
Amalfi Drive Tuesday
Pre–book for £35 or in resort approx €40pp
This magnificent route along the Amalfi coastline is said to be the most spectacular highway in Europe and the snaking cliff top road offers breathtaking panoramic views at every turn. The tour stops first just above Positano, which boasts picturesque white villas perched dramatically on the steep hillside. Then on to Amalfi; once a powerful and prosperous Maritime Republic, and now a thriving holiday resort. The cluster of white tightly packed houses rising up the hillside is dominated by the mosaic–clad St Andrew's Cathedral, a fabulous confection of Romanesque, Norman–Gothic, Byzantine and Arab styles. Admission is €3 and you are asked to cover up (shoulders and knees). From Amalfi we visit Ravello which nestles 1100 feet above the sea and is famous for its terraced gardens and gorgeous buildings. Chief of these is the Villa Rufolo (admission €5), part museum, part concert and exhibition venue, part spectacular beauty spot and known as 'a miniature Alhambra'. If you wish you can also visit the museum in Ravello's cathedral (admission €3pp).
Pompeii Wednesday
Pre–book for £39 or in resort approx. €49pp inc entry
We head to Pompeii, which scarcely needs any introduction. First excavated in 1748, the site of Pompeii stands on a great plateau within plain view of Mount Vesuvius, its Nemesis, in the distance. Here you have the opportunity to see actual Roman houses and streets in situ, with frescoes still visible on the walls of some of the houses, and graffiti in the cart–rutted streets. The scale of Pompeii is vast, and there's a lot to see, so it's not a bad idea to take a guide–book, plus a sunhat and water as there isn't much cover and it can get very hot.
Prices quoted are based on 2016 rates and may change in 2017.
